What the Wonderlic measures

The Wonderlic is a short general cognitive ability test used in hiring, and by the NFL at its scouting combine for many years. Its defining feature is pace: 50 questions in 12 minutes, or about 14 seconds each. The questions themselves are mostly straightforward. Vocabulary, arithmetic, number series, analogies, simple logic and reading a short statement carefully. Very few people finish, so the score depends on how many questions you can answer accurately at speed, not on solving hard puzzles.

A raw score of about 20 to 21 out of 50 is commonly reported as the average on the classic Wonderlic Personnel Test, and employers set their own cut-offs by role. This page cannot tell you which cut-off applies to you. It can tell you how you cope with the format.

How this free practice test works

• 50 original questions in 12 minutes, drawn per attempt from a bank of 231 items: 20 verbal, 20 mathematics and 10 logic. A retake excludes the questions you saw last time.
• The same mix of question types as the real test: word meanings and opposites, odd one out, analogies, similar or contradictory word pairs, percentages, rates, averages, number series, money and time arithmetic, and short deduction puzzles.
• Timed or untimed. Use the timer to rehearse pace; switch it off to learn the question types first.
• A question navigator lets you skip and return, the way you should on the real test.
• Worked answers after you finish, with a skill breakdown across verbal, mathematics and logic.
• An optional shareable result with a permanent link, preview image and an Add to LinkedIn profile button.

Sample Wonderlic questions

Complete the analogy. Painter is to brush as carpenter is to ___. Saw, wood, house, ladder. A painter works with a brush, so the answer is the tool a carpenter works with: saw. Wood and house are what the carpenter makes, not what they work with.

A number is multiplied by 4, then 6 is subtracted. The result is 30. What was the number? Undo the steps in reverse order: add 6, then divide by 4. (30 + 6) ÷ 4 = 9. The most common wrong answer, 6, comes from subtracting 6 first.

Do the words “rapid” and “sluggish” have similar, contradictory or unrelated meanings? Rapid means fast and sluggish means slow, so the pair is contradictory.

How to improve your Wonderlic score

1. Answer in order of speed, not in order of appearance. Vocabulary and same-or-opposite questions take five seconds; a rate problem takes forty. Skip anything that stalls and come back.
2. Read the question stem twice before choosing. “Which word does not belong” and “opposite in meaning” are where fast readers lose easy points.
3. Set up the arithmetic before you calculate. For a discount, decide whether you need the amount off or the price paid. For a ratio, count the parts first.
4. Never leave blanks. There is no penalty for guessing, so fill in every remaining question in the last minute.
5. Practise with the timer on at least twice. The first timed run teaches you the pace; the second shows whether your speed has changed.

Reading your result

Your percentage is the share of the 50 questions you answered correctly, which is the same raw count the official test uses. The result guide explains the score ranges and what to practise for each skill. Because the questions are original and this run is unsupervised, the score does not convert into an official Wonderlic score or a WonScore, and it is not a certificate.
