10-key test: numeric keypad speed in KPH
A free 10-key test reporting keystrokes per hour and accuracy. Ten rows takes about half a minute, or take the full 130-row run, with the scoring rule published.

Ten rows takes about half a minute and is the version most people want. It is a small sample, so a single fumbled row moves the figure a long way, and two quick runs will differ more than two long ones. The long run is the one to take if you are practising for an employer's own test. Both are scored the same way, and a result says which it was.
Speed on a numeric keypad is measured in keystrokes per hour rather than words per minute, because numeric entry has no words in it. This test reports KPH and row accuracy for either a ten row run, which takes about half a minute, or the full 130 row run over three minutes. Its scoring rule is published below.
- The ledger is 130 amounts, every one seven characters in the form
1234.56. A ten row run takes one block of ten consecutive amounts from that list, and the long run takes all 130 in order. - The block is drawn at random, so a retake gives you different digits. Because every amount is the same width, any block is worth the same 70 keystrokes as any other, which is what lets two ten row runs be set beside each other at all.
- A five second countdown runs before the clock starts. The measurement should not begin while you are still finding the keys.
- A row counts only when it matches exactly. There is no partial credit within a row.
- Correct keystrokes is seven multiplied by the number of correct rows.
- Net KPH is correct keystrokes divided by elapsed time in hours, rounded to the nearest ten.
- Accuracy is correct rows as a percentage of the rows you submitted, to one decimal place.
- The decimal point counts as a keystroke. Enter and Backspace do not.
- Backspace is allowed. A row you fixed before submitting counts as correct, and the time it cost is already in the denominator.
- On the long run, a part-typed row when the clock runs out is discarded rather than counted wrong.
- Under a second of elapsed time the speed reads zero, because dividing by almost nothing produces a number rather than a measurement.
- A ten row run has no deadline at all. It ends when you submit the tenth row and is scored on the time you took. The long run ends on the last row or at three minutes, whichever comes first.
- Submit nothing and accuracy reads 100 percent. That is a fallback for having no rows to divide by, not a result.
Ten rows or a hundred and thirty
Ten rows is the default because three minutes of typing digits before seeing any number at all is a wall most people do not climb, and a figure nobody reaches is not a measurement.
It costs something, and the cost is stated rather than buried: ten rows is a small sample. One fumbled row is ten per cent of your accuracy and several hundred KPH, and two quick runs half an hour apart will differ by more than two long runs would. Treat a ten row figure as an estimate. If you are preparing for an employer’s own test, take the long run, because sustaining the motion for three minutes is part of what that test is asking about.
The two are scored by the same arithmetic and are still not interchangeable. A result page says which run produced it.
Why scoring is by row
Scoring by row rather than by character is the one decision worth explaining. Drop a digit halfway down a column and a character-by-character comparison shifts everything after it by one position, so a single slip reads as a hundred mistakes. In real work one mistyped amount is one wrong amount, and that is how it counts here.
Why your score will not match another site
Two posts on r/jobs quote 22,162 KPH and 1,200 KPH. Both are unverified and neither names the test, which is the point: of the seven 10-key and KPH tests we downloaded on 1 September 2026, none published the rule it used to produce a number. Without the rule there is nothing to reconcile two figures against.
So if an application asks for your KPH, name the test you took alongside the figure.
Which results this one can be compared with
The test records which keys produced your digits and labels the result accordingly. A browser cannot see whether a numeric keypad is plugged in, but it can see which key was pressed.
- Numeric keypad. Comparable with other keypad runs on this test.
- Top row. Comparable with other top-row runs. Keypad entry uses a different hand position, so the two are reported separately rather than pooled.
- Mixed. Not comparable, because the motion was not consistent within the run.
- Touch device. Not comparable.
What your score means
We have no KPH norm data. The intervals below locate a score on this instrument; they are not percentiles and not hiring thresholds.
Four of the sites currently ranking for these searches do publish one. Checked on 1 September 2026: official-typing-test.com gives 12,000 KPH at 98 percent accuracy as qualifying “for just about any data entry job”; testmytyping.com gives 10,000 as a minimum and 18,000 as expert; typingtest.now gives 8,000 to 10,000 for logistics and 12,000 for payroll; typequicker.com puts the average at 8,000 to 12,000. Those figures broadly agree with each other. Not one of the four says where it got them, and we could not find a published study behind any of them.

If a specific job has told you what it wants, use that number. It is the one figure here that arrives with a source attached.
Accuracy, and why speed is the easier half
Numeric entry has no redundancy in it. A mistyped word in a sentence usually still reads; a mistyped figure is simply a different amount, and it carries no trace of being wrong.
This test reports accuracy as a share of rows, not of characters, so 98 percent here means two rows in a hundred went in wrong, each of them a whole amount.
If you are hiring for keypad work
The instrument above is a practice test. It is unsupervised and there is no identity check, so anyone can retake it until the number flatters them, and it cannot screen a candidate. What it can do is show you what this particular measurement feels like before you write a figure into a posting.
Match the test to the motion the work uses. This one measures keypad transcription of numbers. If the work is mixed alphanumeric entry from documents, the data entry accuracy test measures that instead; if it involves arithmetic rather than transcription, workplace numeracy is the closer measure.
Keep speed and accuracy as two numbers. A single combined figure hides which of them is the constraint.

Where keypad entry shows up
Bookkeeping, payroll, accounts payable, bank teller work, claims processing and inventory control: roles where part of the day is entering columns of figures from a source document.
Where the work involves only occasional numeric entry, keypad throughput may not be a useful measure.
