What a candidate actually does
- Enter a column of amounts from a printed ledger
- Enter mixed decimal and whole figures without a mouse
How it is scored
Keystrokes per hour alongside an error rate. Both matter: a fast operator with a two percent error rate is usually the worse hire.
Roles it suits
- Bookkeeping
- Payroll clerk
- Bank teller
- Inventory clerk
What it will not tell you
Keypad layout habits vary. Candidates used to a laptop without a numeric pad may test below their real working speed.
Every test has a boundary like this. A test used outside it stops predicting anything, which is the usual reason a hiring team loses faith in testing altogether.
